Sing Street #MicroblogMonday

One of the movies that stood out for us last year was "Sing Street", a low-budget Irish movie. Often I find that there are so many huge blockbusters full of special effects and fight scenes these days that I miss the simpler films with more of a story to them! Sing Street is set in Dublin in the 1980s and as someone who grew up around then, I enjoyed feeling nostalgic watching it. A bit like how "Stranger Days" the Netflix series was also set in the 80s. Both reminded me of the time before smartphones and constant access to internet, when you would go out all day with your friends on adventures.

Sing Street revolves around a 16 year old boy who moves to a new school. Life is hard. There's a bully, a principal who has it in for him, and to top it off his parents might be getting a divorce. He soon falls for a 17 year old girl who wants to move to London and become a model. In order to impress her he decides to form a music band and make videos together. That's all I'll say without spoiling anything. The music was really good. I've even been listening to the soundtrack since ("drive it like you stole it" is the name of the catchy theme song). Dublin also looked lovely in it. Overall it was just a fun film that left you in a good mood after watching.

  2. I, too, get nostalgia for movies , TV, and music from the 80s (and 90s). It was a good time to be a baby, a child, and then a teen. I wouldn't change it for anything. Sounds like a cute movie. Is it on Netflix?

    1. yeah it's nice to watch the old stuff and feel nostalgic sometimes, isn't it? We watched it on Amazon prime, don't think it's on Netflix yet.

  3. A friend of mine also said that Sing Street is lovely - I just love those films that send you off on a high. Billy Elliot was one of those for me - I was in an invincible mood afterwards (till next day at work). I must try to get to see this: so annoyed that there are no more DVD rental shops in Dublin! I also haven't seen Stranger Things. I suppose it's a good thing as I have them to look forward to! Thanks a mil for the recommendations Dubliner.

    1. oh yeah I was really disappointed when I was back in Dublin and saw all the DVD rental places have closed down! I also love when films put you in a good mood after, we need more of that these days.

  4. It sounds good. I so want to go to Dublin. For some reason, my husband and I keep delaying travel to Ireland, saying that it's one of those places we can go when we're old, even though we both really want to visit, and I want to trace back some Irish ancestors (including the one who gave me my last name).

    1. oh that's cool that you have Irish ancestors! You should definitely try to plan a trip sooner rather than later. It's a fun place to visit and has some really beautiful areas

  5. I will have to look into Sing Street, it sounds like a feel-good treat. I feel like movies lately are either super intense or super heavy, and sometimes you just want some good old fashioned entertainment. I liked LaLaLand for that, although I argue with people over the end. And I recently saw The Lego Batman Movie, which is ridiculous, but the humor seemed much more for adults than kids and it was highly entertaining. I love "Stranger Things," so much, and am so excited for the new season to come out. Is it titled differently in Europe? I know they do that with movies, it would be so interesting to see how things shift with cultures. I grew up at that time too, and it really captures the feeling of the mid-to-late 80s. Thanks for the recommendations!

    1. Oh I've been meaning to see La La Land, I've heard good things about it. I saw the first Lego movie and enjoyed it. I loved that "everything is awesome" song, so funny! I didn't realise movies and shows can be titled differently between the US and Europe! I know that German titles of movies get totally changed though!
